College Guidance

The goal of college counseling at Wooster is to prepare and guide students for the next stage of their education and lives, and to ensure that their choices and decisions are both informed and considered. Wooster has a longstanding tradition as a college preparatory school, and college counseling is an integral part of the Wooster experience.

Freshmen and sophomores begin looking ahead to college as they go through orientation, sit for PSATs, and select courses appropriate to their future plans. Members of the College Guidance Department address freshmen and sophomore classes, to underline the importance of academic focus in these years.

Intensive college guidance begins in the spring of junior year, when students are assigned individual college advisors and embark on the formal guidance program. At this time they are asked to complete an extensive questionnaire which helps them to think about their personalities, goals, and aspirations. Advisors, students, and families work closely together as the students explore higher education and career options.

From the start of the second semester, the junior class meets regularly as a group to discuss college admissions issues and procedures. In addition, each junior begins regular weekly meetings with his or her advisor. Together they review the student's academic records, test scores, extracurricular activities, and possible career goals, and based on this information, devise a list of colleges ranging in selectivity.

Both group and individual discussions focus on social and developmental topics as well. The transition from high school to college is, after all, a major event in life, and Wooster seeks to equip students with the skills they will need to leave home and lead successful independent lives.

As they enter their senior year, students finalize their college lists and prepare the actual applications. Throughout the process, students receive support, advice and encouragement. Guidance, rather than placement, is the focus of Wooster college counseling.

In addition to experienced personnel, the Wooster College Guidance Department offers extensive materials and resources, including software, video tapes and brochures. Each year representatives from over 30 colleges visit the campus to meet directly with interested students, and the annual Wooster college fair provides an opportunity for students gather information from numerous institutions and learn of the many possibilities in higher education.

The Department also hosts evening information events for juniors and their parents. Parent conferences are encouraged to foster communication and exchange of ideas. The College Guidance Handbook, which is given to each junior, provides a step-by-step guide for applying to college.
