- BACKPACK: Put your backpack at the place you do your HW. Having a consistent place where you work is important. Make sure, however, that your HW workplace is not on your bed!
- PLANNER: Open your planner and MOODLE.
- WRITE ASSIGNMENTS: Write down all your HW for the night in your planner including what is printed on Moodle. For all long-term projects, assignments, and tests that are not due the next day, enter them on a large desk calendar that you check every day until the project, assignment, or test is done.
- TAKE A BREAK! Have a snack, walk your dog, etc. Think about the HW you have for the night. Do I have a lot? Do I have to study for a test the next day? Do I have a project that I need to work on? Do I have to write a paper? A break at this time is important because it allows you to plan how you will complete your work.
- After your break: ORGANIZE ALL BINDERS 1st! File all loose papers. It takes less than 1 minute per subject per day to keep up with organization. Clean out ALL loose papers. Eliminate all “piles” of papers. Have tabbed spaces inside each binder so you can file course materials logically.
- START your HW in any order you choose.
- CHECK OFF in your planner when you have finished an assignment. This is an important step that reassures and reminds you that you have actually finished an assignment, especially if you have started an assignment in school during a study hall but have not returned to it until later.
- If you need to, TAKE short 5 minute breaks between each assignment. Movement breaks are the best (stretching, walking, etc.); screen-time breaks are the worst because they are more difficult to control the time you spend. It’s good to take breaks because it increases the dopamine in your brain and wakes you up! Also your brain is actually working to store and learn the new information you have just put in.
- PUT FINISHED ASSIGNMENTS AWAY. Put each finished assignment into the correct binder. It’s a good idea to have a designated spot inside each binder where completed HW is placed. Many binders have inside pockets that are great for this purpose.
- When your HW is finished for the night, PACK UP your backpack. Look around your workspace and make sure you have not forgotten anything. Then put your backpack by the door you will leave your house from in the morning. Reducing morning stress by not having to pack up is a much better way to start your day!
