Academics at The Prospect School at Wooster

The Prospect School provides direct instruction in basic skills embedded in a challenging and enriching academic curriculum. A variety of interventions are used in an integrated manner right from the beginning so that students are continuously working on all areas of reading spelling, writing, listening, speaking, mathematics, and study skills.

There is no "one size fits all" solution for students at the Prospect School. We utilize a variety of highly specialized programs designed to remediate specific learning difficulties across the educational disciplines. Here is a brief sample of some of the

techniques that we may use to help your child succeed academically:

The Orton-Gillingham Approach: A structured, sequential, and multisensory approach to
teaching reading. This program assumes nothing and takes students from hearing the most basic
sounds to decoding and understanding highly complicated texts. The Orton-Gillingham approach undergirds all of the language instruction in our classrooms and is fundamental to the success of our students. All of our teachers are trained in this specialized reading program.

The Fountas and Pinell Leveled Literacy Intervention: This small group guided reading program uses beautiful and interesting books to boost students reading fluency and comprehension. Students read books at their instructional level with their peers while they learn to clarify, predict, question, and summarize while they read.

Stern Structural Math: At once constructivist, applied, and hands-on, this program allows
students to explore mathematical concepts through the use of games involving wooden blocks. The active, visual, and tactile nature of the experience allows students to feel the math and to
internalize mathematical concepts.

Diana Hanbury King's Writing and Typing Programs: These programs teach students to type using multisensory methods to remember the home keys. Writing is taught in a structured and
sequential manner from the most basic concepts. Students learn to first form correct sentences, then paragraphs, essays, letters, and a wide variety of composition types.

In addition to this powerful array of classroom interventions, our students also have access to 1:1 instruction. All frequencies are based on student need; however, students at the Prospect school can receive up to 1 hour per day of 1:1 Orton-Gillingham reading instruction, as well as 1 hour per day of 1:1 remedial mathematics instruction.
