The Athletics Program at Wooster
Wooster’s athletic program, which includes 31 interscholastic teams, has been recognized as one of the most successful small school programs in all of New England. In addition to having numerous top ranked teams (including 46 league titles and 49 bids to the prestigious New England tournament), we have been honored with an astounding 44 sportsmanship awards in recent years. Our Middle School program has enjoyed tremendous growth in recent years. We currently offer a total of 13 interscholastic teams in the following sports: soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee. We have created a program that clearly carries out the mission of the school and benefits everyone involved.
A Word About Athletics
What separates our program from most is our proven ability to not only combine, but sustain, both a competitive edge and a focus on sportsmanship. One of the reasons for our successes is that our coaching staff is mostly comprised of our faculty members, providing a well balanced approach to coaching and education. Our coaches recognize that the athletic program provides a powerful forum for discovering and creating "teaching moments." It is through these moments that we foster respect, confidence, teamwork, community, and self-esteem. The more "teaching moments" that we create, the further we develop the skills and character of our student athletes, and this is what will help them throughout the rest of their lives.
Wooster values the commitment of its athletes and has recently upgraded the athletic facilities. In addition to our rolling 127 acre campus, we have four soccer fields, two volleyball courts, a cross country trail, three gymnasiums (with three basketball courts), six tennis courts, two lacrosse fields, a softball field, a baseball field, and a state of the art fitness center. Our newest gymnasium was built five years ago as a donation from Steve Young’s Forever Young Foundation.
Wooster provides for the health of its athletes through its Athletic Training Program, run by Certified Athletic Trainer Ron Hutchins. For more information about athletic training at Wooster, click on Athletic Training from the menu on the left.
