Wooster Announces the Creation of the Athletic Hall of Fame!

Wooster’s Alumni Council and Athletic Department are pleased to announce the creation of the Athletic Hall of Fame.  We are proud and excited to honor all those who have made significant contributions to our athletic program, whether it was on the courts, fields, coaching sidelines, or in some other form.  The inaugural class of inductees will be recognized during Alumni Weekend in May of 2013.  

The Athletic Hall of Fame is long overdue and we want to ensure that we launch this program successfully and with all of the fanfare it deserves.  We need your help to compile a list of worthy candidates.  Please let us know the following (and provide as much detail as possible): 
• Who were the top athletes in your class? 
• Who were the best athletes during your time at Wooster? 
• Who was the best coach you had at Wooster?
• Were any school records established during your time?

We are always interested in learning more about our rich athletic heritage.  In addition to supplying the information above, we hope that you will share some of your most memorable athletic experiences with us.  Please email us at HallofFame [at] woosterschool [dot] org and we will post some of your stories under the heading “Alumni Corner.” Our goal is to embrace both our past and current programs.

About the Hall of Fame:

Eligibility Guidelines:
• Alumni/ae: Must have graduated a minimum of 5 years ago and will be evaluated on athletic achievements, sportsmanship, leadership, and team play.  Their actions must have brought credit to themselves, their team, and the school.
• Coach: Must either be retired or have left Wooster and will be evaluated on their performance as a coach - keeping in mind such qualities as teaching skills, life lessons, building character, etc...
• Other: Any other individual with an official tie to Wooster - such as an athletic trainer, long-time volunteer, or a “friend” to the program.

Eligibility Considerations:
• All seniors who have earned either the Outstanding Athlete Award or the Scholar-Athlete Award will be eligible for consideration.
• All school record holders, which have stood the test of time (minimum of 10 years) will be eligible for consideration.
• All multiple MVP award winners will be eligible for consideration.
• All other nominations must have the approval of the Nominating Committee to be eligible for consideration.

Inductions: Frequency, Preferences, and Numbers of:
• Inductions will occur annually until such time when inductees become scarce.  At such time, the rate at which members are inducted will be revisited.
• It is preferable to select recipients who are in a Reunion year, whenever possible.
• To launch the program, we will induct 10-12 individuals into the Hall of Fame.

Selection Procedure:
• The Nominating Committee will collect nominations from a variety of sources and make recommendations of those individuals it deems worthy of inclusion to the Selection Committee.

Time Line:

• Early June: Class Agents send out letters to classmates seeking nominations - with a July 31 deadline.  Nominations are also sought from various groups - Nominating Committee, Alumni Council, Athletic Department, Development Office … with the same deadline.

• Early June to Early August: The Nominating Committee works to find nomination-worthy candidates.

• Month of August: The Nominating Committee meets to discuss all nominees and narrows the list to just the finalists.

• Early September: The Nominating Committee meets to discuss and prioritize the finalists.  The Committee forwards the prioritized list to the Selection Committee. 

• September: The Selection Committee meets and determines the recipients for induction.

• October: The names of those to be inducted into the Hall of Fame are announced.
